Why is my Classic so Crazy? (Sonic the Hedgehog)

They always get it *almost* right.

Oh, SEGA. How I adore you - you've mothered me, fathered me, you are my childhood and pinnacle of my personal nostalgia.

So why do things keep going awry? Sonic the Hedgehog is exceptional game. Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and 3, and the Sonic and Knuckles add-on cart - even more so. They showcase the epitome of the 2D platformer, encompassing great platforming action, speed, momentum, and a main character with attitude with a single aim; to stop the villainous animal-snatcher, Robotnik. It's in these simple elements that the franchise finds charm and strength.

So why, now, is he involved in Hedgehog-human love triangles, alternate dimensions, ultimate beings from Hell, turning into a Werehog, going back in time and wielding a sword, or being part of a bizarre Arabian Nights compilation storybook?

It seems like every time we get close to the Sonic of old, something totally ridiculous gets added in at the last minute to make it absurd. I mean, how many new characters can they add? Or reasons for their introduction? Shadow and Silver are a cyborg and telekinetic from the future respectively - what's next, a fireball-chucking Kudu from the Nth dimension?

It seems like someone totally crazy is injecting our beloved Sonic with a touch of the absurd. And there's only one guy I know with ideas quite on that particular level of absurdity...

Why can't they make a game where Sonic kills zombies? Resident Sonic!
