You're Playing with Portals...Like Everyone Else (Portal)

Portals are pretty cool. It was upon finishing Portal that I realised just how many games use portals.

I mean, not necessarily to the level of gameplay-based complexity, flair or creativity that Portal has; but they've certainly featured heavily in gaming, much as they've been a convenient tool for sci-fi shows and movies.

In Portal, you can actively create an entrance and exit portal to venture through to navigate what are, effectively, a series of mazes in an experimental lab - and you're the rat. This is a solid and pretty simple concept, but a very elegantly executed gameplay mechanic which is admittedly pretty ground-breaking.

But I have a Portal fanboy friend who completely dismisses portals as elements in games prior to his beloved game. I'm not slating the game, I'm just saying, those games exist! Portals have existed before Portal, and they were as cool then as they are now!

That said however, I draw the line at giving one of the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse a Portal Gun...
